Whenever water damage has occurred in a home or building, if left untreated it may lead to mold problems, which can cause further damage and pose health risks. Basements are a common issue in this case if water has found its way in through cracks or seams in the foundation, and sometimes attics may suffer due to a damaged roof. In these situations, careful steps must be taken to remove the mold and repair the structural damage.

There are thousands of species of molds, releasing spores into the air as a means of reproduction. It is the moisture of consistently damp places which is ideal for mold to thrive in, and virtually no surface is off limits. Preventative measures include keeping all areas dry and cleaning water damage within one to two days if possible.

In a situation where mold has gained a foothold somewhere, removal and reparation may depend on the surface type affected. Wood is highly vulnerable, being an organic material that mold can consume, and prolonged exposure to mold can weaken wood; this is known as brown rot. Wooden beams affected in this way may need replacement. Moldy ceiling tiles and insulation should be discarded and replaced as well. Dry wall mold can often be reduced by cutting it away, or it may need replacing if there is swelling.

When the cause of the mold damage has been determined following a thorough inspection, repairs and cleaning should be swift to prevent another infestation. Rubber gloves, goggles, and breathing protection are recommended due to spores in the air. The area under carpets and porous types of flooring are also prone to mold damage caused by water. A water extraction vacuum can be used in these cases, and also for concrete or cinder blocks. Scrubbing with soap, bleach, and water should suffice for most smooth surfaces. The drying process should then be accelerated using dehumidifiers or open windows, as fans may stir up spores.

Major mold damage may require a contractor specializing in mold remediation and water damage restoration, and some insurance policies may cover the cost if reported promptly. Contact us at Water Damage Orlando for all your restoration needs.
