Affiliate Marketing On The Internet

Affiliate Marketing is a performance based sales technique used by companies to expand their reach into the internet at low costs. This commission based program allows affiliate marketers to place ads on their websites or other advertising efforts such as email distribution in exchange for payment of a small commission when a sale results.

There are different methods for participation in affiliate marketing programs. One of the easiest is signing up through an affiliate clearing houses like LinkShare, Kolimbo, or Commission Junction. They offer a place for companies who want low cost advertising to match up with website marketers who want to gain commission payments for placing advertising on their websites. Marketers place a banner or link ad on their website, and when a viewer clicks through on that ad, they are routed directly to the advertiser website. A cookie is used to track where the customer came from to the website, and if that customer purchases within a certain time frame, then the website owner would receive payment for the resulting sale. The clearing house receives payment from the advertiser, and then pays the affiliate the earned fee.

Advertisers can have untold amounts of ads and only pay per performance, as sales are achieved. For the website owner, very little work is required other than if they do not get website traffic, no one will see their carefully placed ads and efforts will not pay off. The clearing house is good for marketers because they do not have to sign up individually with all the advertisers, nor do they have to provide important personal information multiple times.

Individual advertisers may offer their own affiliate marketing programs to those who wish to sign up directly at their websites. Click-per-pay programs pay affiliates after sales depending on the click through rate, or they pay a small amount, like a penny per click, for “leads” who click through. Companies can spread product information and generate sales through affiliates by offering fully loaded websites free or for a price, and then pay commissions per sales.

Another method of affiliate marketing offers multi-tier payments to affiliates. For example, if someone places an ad on a website and a sale results, and then that customer signs up under the website ad to become an affiliate of the advertiser, the original website affiliate gets a second, reduced commission on sales generated by their downline affiliate.

Sometimes a new affiliate covers their website with too many banners; this is referred to as a banner farm. Those who focus on a niche would use just a few pertinent banners and work heavily to promote those ads. They may use emails or other marketing attempts online instead of placing banners on a website, but care must be taken to avoid spamming.

Affiliate marketers must keep links active and current, and change ads frequently so website content looks renewed and more interesting. Affiliate marketing is often overlooked by advertisers, but it is a great way to promote on the internet.
